Just when you though 2020 couldn’t be weirder: Kanye runs for President

Kanye throws the cat among the Presidential pigeons as he says he’s running for the Oval Office. But there’s another candidate also named Kanye West…

Just when we thought 2020 couldn’t get any stranger. Rapper Kanye West had to go and show us we were absolutely wrong.

The famous rapper, apparent fan of Donald Trump and husband to Kim Kardashian West has announced via Twitter – also Trump’s preferred way of communicating with the wider world – that he will be running for America’s top job.

“We must now realise the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future,” West wrote. “I am running for president of the United States.”

The post was accompanied by a stars and stripes flag, an exclamation mark and “#2020VISION”.

Elon Musk voices immediate support for West

Some seemed to think it’s a good idea, others perhaps less so. Elon Musk, high-profile CEO at auto-maker Tesla, was quick to voice his support for the President West idea by tweeting simply: “You have my full support!”

David Smith, Washington correspondent for the London-based Guardian, was more cynical: “With just four months to go before polling day on 3 November, it was not clear whether West’s tweet would have been more fitting on April Fools ’ Day than American Independence Day,” he wrote.

Forbes magazine also seemed a little unsure whether this is the real deal in terms of a run for the White House.

“Yesterday, West finally announced his 2020 presidential run. Or rather, he typed a tweet on his phone and tapped, ‘send’,” it observed.

“That’s it – for now, there’s no evidence that West has actually filed the necessary paperwork, meaning he would have to run as a write-in candidate, if he’s serious.”

There’s another candidate names Kanye West

And in another twist to the tale, it appears there is already a candidate running for the White House named Kanye West. Only it’s not the Kanye West.

“There is, currently, one presidential candidate named Kanye West in the FEC (Federal Election Commission) database for the 2020 election year, a Green Party candidate named, umm …. “Kanye Deez Nutz West.” So, probably not the real Kanye,” Forbes reported.

So could we then have Kanye Deez Nutz West versus Kanye West in a Presidential run-off on Tuesday 3 November 2020, which is when the next United States Presidential election is due?

Who said 2020 couldn’t get any weirder…
