Japanese Encephalitis: Victorian man dies of the virus

Japanese Encephalitis is extremely rare in Australia but has now become unprecedented in the region. Individuals who are in the eastern regions of Australia are particularly at risk.

Since patient confidentiality is of priority, the man’s identity has not been disclosed. The man is said to be in his sixties and resided in Victoria.

An investigation is still underway to find the origins of the virus. According to the Department of Agriculture, when the virus came to Australia is uncertain.

Virologists did not believe the Japanese Encephalitis would make it to Australia

Presently, virologists did not believe that the Japanese Encephalitis would make it to Australia. However, given the weather conditions, it is not surprising that it has occurred. 

According to The Guardian, the Japanese Encephalitis virus is most prominent in rural areas as well as still waters. It can also occur in farming areas with those who have pigs and horses.
