Growing old gracefully: The Tube turns 150

THERE’S something very enticing about an older man for some women. Usually it’s not the look I go for, but in this case, there is a certain man I have my eye on. A man who just turned 150.

He’s no George Clooney, and he certainly doesn’t have the ‘salt and pepper’ look about him. Nonetheless, this aged beauty still has got a lot going for him.

As I sit here on my Mac in this day and age, thinking about how much he has changed, what he has been through, and how modern yet classic he is today – I feel nothing but awed.

Although he is not yet perfect (he is male, what do we expect) he has the traits of a true gentleman. His accomplishments are quite impressive too, and with all his experiences he really is quite a catch.

150 years down the track and he still gets us to where we need to go.

He keeps us warm and cosy, even if it is because we are squished amongst strangers sharing their body heat.

He introduces us to all his friends on a daily basis, even if we may only ever see them once and once only on our journey around London. Of course, introductions are made only once we sprint from the tube station gates, dodge the millions of people walking the opposite way, get caught between the doors to make it in just in time, and still not manage to get a seat.

He may be a bit creaky at times, but he is more refined today than ever before. He’s also up with the latest technology, having introduced wifi hot spots at key stations. Pretty fly for an old guy!

He would certainly be one I would want to take to meet the folks at home. He’s diverse and accommodating. He is selfless and welcomes everyone. I guess that comes with age.

With birthdays come presents and I have thought long and hard about the perfect gift. Perhaps a pack of mousetraps would be fit for my king. A bit of cosmetic surgery adding extra seating to his curvaceous body. Or maybe a motion sensored Ambi Pur canister. That’s what every 150 year old wants, right?

He probably won’t get any Facebook love for his birthday like many of us do, but I’ll be sure to be sing him my own little happy birthday song.

Hip Hip Hooray Tubey. I luv you!
