Police in Victoria are searching for a man and a woman after they fled authorised officers at Melbourne airport yesterday (Friday) morning.

The pair disembarked a flight from Canberra just before 11am and were spoken to by authorised officers and informed they would be required to quarantine for 14 days, as per current Chief Health Officer directions.

They then ran from the officers, fled the airport and were picked up by a vehicle outside.

The 26-year-old man and 24-year-old woman, who normally reside in NSW, are believed to be in the Sunbury area.

A vital step to protect the community

“The current Chief Health Officer directions are a vital step in order to protect the Victorian community and slow the spread of coronavirus,” Victoria Police said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the Northern Territory Government has declared Covid-19 hotspots over the Greater Sydney Metropolitan area and said a close watch on the rising number of cases in Victoria is being maintained.

“If you are intending to travel to the Northern Territory from a hotspot you are advised to rethink your plans. If you are a Territorian intending to travel to a hotspot you are advised to rethink your plans,” a statement released by Department of the Chief Minister and Cabinet said.

Advice on entering NT from hotspots

Anyone travelling to the Northern Territory who has been in a currently declared hotspot must undertake 14 days of mandatory supervised quarantine at the Alice Springs or Howard Springs quarantine facilities at a cost of $2,500 per person. Howard Springs is located about 30km outside Darwin.

The statement said additional advice from the NT’s Chief Health Officer asks that anyone who attended the Swallowed Anchor restaurant in Wollongong, NSW, on Saturday 19 December 2020 at any time, and has arrived in the NT since 25 December 2020, to get a Covid test immediately and self-isolate until a negative test is returned as a precautionary measure.

“The Chief Health Officer will continue to review and assess the Covid-19 situation in NSW and Victoria and take into account Covid-19 monitoring and data collection, the extent of community transmission and risks to the NT community,” it stated.
