How to write a perfect essay outline

If you want to do anything well – plan for it. At least that is the idea in life and in writing. If you want to excel in an essay – create a good plan to support its success.

Once you have this basic right, you can then focus on supporting your work further with great content. Learn what to include and what to avoid for the best results. Read through these basic tips to appreciate the foundations of developing the perfect essay outline.

Read the essay instructions

Your first step is to read through your essay instructions attentively. As you do, highlight the sections that are important. This will help you to understand what is needed before proceeding with the outline. If you don’t understand something, clarify this with your lecturer.

Determine the purpose of the essay

Do the instructions clearly tell you whether you should write an essay that is persuasive, informative, or other? If not, part of your outline will need to include this element. If it is up to you to decide, then make a choice because your outline will follow this purpose.

Generate topic ideas for your outline

Again, your instructions either specify your essay topic or leave it up to you. Figure out which it is so you can start generating ideas around your topic.

Write or type out your basic outline. You will need an introduction to begin with; a hook in your introduction and several sub-headings in the body of your essay content. Lastly, you will need a conclusion.

To fill in these foundation areas, you will need to do some brainstorming to come up with ideas. Next, separate your ideas as being good or bad in terms of your subject matter. State the logic behind thoughts and counter arguments to support your statements.

You can also get some help from the online academic writers who handle this work as their main job. Go to the website and find out more details about it. You will get all the information you need regarding essays and even other assignments that include thesis, dissertation, term papers and research papers.

Build on your content plan

You can do this by using a free writing exercise. Follow up with clustering activity and questioning. Be sure you write to impress the right audience, while also developing your thesis.

Engage in some free writing to support your subject matter, using the basic outline developed. Once you have some content under each of your headings and sub-headings, you can revise. Read through your work and start to highlight the good points and eliminate those that are just padding.

Cluster your related ideas together by circling the main idea on the center of a piece of paper. Jot down related ideas around this to build on your ideas with brainstorming.

Begin a process of questioning your logic by asking, “What, when, who, why, where, how?” This will help you to single out your strongest and weakest thoughts.

Determine that all-important question of who your audience is. If you don’t know who you’re writing for, your essay will likely be off the mark.

What is the thesis of your essay?

After all the earlier preparations have been made, you should be at the right stage to write your thesis statement. Your thesis statement should contain the primary focus of your essay.

It should preferably only be one sentence, and it should consist of an arguable claim that is sufficiently descriptive. The reader should know what your essay is about by reading this thesis statement in other words.

This means that your audience and your essay content should question how valid the statement is. The body of your content should, therefore, also provide arguments for and against the statement (thesis) that you have made.

Paragraph and sentence structure

Your instructions should help you to calculate how many headings and sub-headings you will need for the ideal essay outline. Make sure that these follow a logical path when writing out your outline.

Another issue is to make sure that you keep your paragraphs reasonably short at no more than 100 to 150 words each. Make sure that the end of each paragraph introduces the subject of your next paragraph.

Avoid run-on sentences, as these become complex to read and detract from your content and thesis statement. Keep sentences under 20 words for easy reading.

Last tips

Create a hook in your first sentence or at least the first paragraph of your essay, which should introduce your topic. Describe the subject matter in the next sentences, including the background or problem. Be brief but comprehensive. Follow this with your thesis statement.

The body of your content will follow. Lastly, your conclusion should summarize the primary points of your essay, and whether your thesis statement is correct, incorrect or cannot be proven. Make sure no new ideas or content are included here. Always read through your draft at least three times to make improvements and fix mistakes.

Conclusion

The ideal essay requires time, effort and careful planning. If you want to deliver an excellent job, take your time by following the tips provided. Rather take the time in the beginning to produce good work than do unnecessary revisions at a later stage. Practice essay outlines as these are the mainstay of college assignments. Developing good habits at the beginning will support success in the future.
