Excel Funding Group, a specialist mortgage management company focused exclusively on self-managed super fund (SMSF) property finance, today announced that it has achieved a significant milestone in loan settlements, with volumes now tripling its Q1 2025 performance, marking a substantial step forward in its growth trajectory.

A Strategic Choice: Uncompromising SMSF Specialisation

The company, which commenced operations in December 2024, has positioned itself in a narrowly defined segment of Australia’s mortgage market by declining standard residential and investment lending in favour of exclusive specialisation in SMSF property loans. EFG operates as a mortgage manager rather than a broker, through a white-label product arrangement with one of Australia’s largest non-bank funders.

“We made a deliberate decision to turn away from the standard finance business, even though our platform supports it,” said Arthur Shin, Co-Founder of Excel Funding Group. “We believe SMSF lending is critically underserved. Most mortgage brokers lack the expertise to handle these loans properly.”

Executive Expertise and Leadership

Excel Funding Group’s leadership team brings combined experience spanning financial services, credit assessment, property investment and treasury operations. Patrick, who’s General Manager, has worked with self-managed super funds and property investment for over 15 years, while Henry, the company’s Head of Credit, brings deep expertise in SMSF loan assessment from application through to settlement.

The Three Pillars of Differentiation

The company differentiates itself through three core pillars: direct client and broker access to senior credit assessors with same-day turnaround on borrowing capacity scenarios; exclusive SMSF specialisation that addresses the knowledge gaps common among generalist brokers; and what the company describes as highly competitive SMSF interest rates in the Australian market.

“There is significant misinformation in the market,” said Henry. “The major banks pulled out of SMSF lending years ago, and many in the professional community haven’t caught up with the fact that specialist lenders are still very much active.”

EFG serves both retail clients directly and operates a wholesale broker channel, providing partner brokers with specialist SMSF credit support. The company’s leadership has collectively facilitated approximately $470 million in lending through its funding partner.
