Facts and myths about tap and bottled water

Is bottled water really better for you than water straight from the tap? What is the most environmentally sound way to get your water? The answers may surprise you...

Life without water is unimaginable and we readily grab a glass whenever we are thirsty. But, have you ever thought about the myths and facts associated with water?

You may not have realised, but some of them have direct impact on your health and environment. In this article, we will discuss about tap and bottled water and help you distinguish the facts from the myths.

  1. Bottled Water Costs 1000X More than Tap Water

This is a fact. You spend a penny for a gallon of tap water; whereas you pay $2.00 for a 16-ounce bottled water. This means you are paying 1600 times more for the bottled water compared to the tap water available at your home. Moreover, if you drink water at public places such as your school, you drink it for free.

  1. Bottled Water is Purer than Tap Water

Now that is a myth. Many tests performed at reputed laboratories found higher levels of contaminants in bottled water compared to tap water. Moreover, the standards of cleanliness are higher for tap water (tested by EPA) than bottled water (tested by FDA). If a brand of bottled water fails to meet the standards of FDA, they can still sell the water by labelling it as “It contains excessive chemical substances.” Check out the zip hydrotap and transform water into the form (boiling, chilled, filtered, sparkling, etc.) that you love drinking the most.

  1. Water Bottles are Eco-friendly Since They are Re-Cycled

This is a myth. About 86 percent of the plastic water bottles end up in the trash since they are not recycled. Moreover, a huge amount of fossil fuel gets burnt in the process of transporting bottled water and keeping them cold. Therefore, bottled water is not an environment-friendly option.

  1. Your Body is Already Dehydrated When You Feel Thirsty

This is a fact. Research shows your body is already 1 percent dehydrated when you feel thirsty. You can feel tired, have headaches, suffer from poor mental capacity, and stomach aches due to this level of dehydration. So it is important that you keep yourself hydrated. However, it is a myth that you need to drink 8 glasses of water to keep yourself hydrated. 8 to 12 glasses of any fluid can help you stay hydrated throughout the day.

  1. Bottled Water Causes Tooth Decay

Bottled water does not lead to tooth decay directly. Bottled water is void of fluorides, which is why it cannot prevent tooth decay. On the other hand, tap water has fluorides added to it, so it can prevent tooth decay, since fluoride is important for the mineralization of teeth and bone. With the increase in the consumption of bottled water, there has been an increase in the number of people suffering from tooth decay. However, drinking bottled water does not directly cause tooth decay.
