Why a year abroad should include a travel blog

Not only should you travel, but you should document your adventures in a travel blog.

“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.”
― Augustine of Hippo

This quote rings particularly true and is why adventurers advocate that when it is within your means, everyone should travel within their lifetime. There is nothing that rounds out your life and gets you more in touch with who you are and who you want to be than travel.

Not only should you travel, but you should document your adventures in a travel blog. The best way that one can truly appreciate and understand things is to write them out; writing about your experiences allows the moment to stick more clearly the mind and highlight any lessons learned or personal growth.

Blogging about your travels can allow you to process your experience, understand your reaction to this new found wisdom, and better remember it in the long run. It somehow makes the experience more real. It also allows you to more adequately express these unique travel experiences to others in a way that posting pictures on Facebook or Instagram simply cannot.

In the end, a well written travel blog is a lot more memorable than a photo album: whether physical or online. Moreover, those reading your blog can follow along with you on your journey instead of waiting to hear all about it when you return. Moreover, popular bloggers like Nomadic Matt have flourished and essentially made a career out of travel blogging.

If that has made the thought at all appealing, then here are some basic tips for starting your travel blog:

1. Pick a CMS

There are a lot of great options out there. If you plan to write merely to keep friends and family in-the-loop, then going for a free WordPress or Blogger CMS is likely good enough. If, however, you fall in love with the wonderful world of travel blogging and think that you want to invest a lot more time and energy into it, then designing your own blog platform could be a better option for you. Our article on apps for the tech-savvy traveller is also worth checking out for some tips.

2. Choose Your Host

Some people would classify this as the first step, but you need to have a site before you consider a company to host it. Ultimately you want to go with something reliable and that serves your site in a versatile capacity. This is when cloud hosting would probably be more beneficial than a dedicated server, since you will be spanning the globe in your travels. Just do a little research when checking out your blog hosting options and remember that customer reviews are your best friend when choosing a hosting company.

3. Write Smart

Develop a writing schedule and stick to it. When a blog goes old or stale it loses all of its lustre and charm. Also remember to use images optimally, as the photos of your journeys are still going to be worth 1,000 words. It is also a good move to link your social media accounts to your blog and promote your new posts so that your readers are aware of fresh content.

Ultimately, the biggest tips to give are to have fun, create memories, try new things, meet new people, love every moment, and really live your life – that’s what travel is really all about.
