Firefighters crunched for time as fire escalates
Just as Queensland has been dealing with a flooding crisis, a fire that could be seen from miles away has erupted in Wickham. The firefighters are currently crunched for time. This comes as the old wool building is situated close to a petrol storage facility.
While the fire has continued to erupt, as many as 100 firefighters came onto the scene with 30 trucks accompanying them. Residents have been urged to stay indoors and close their windows. As well as remove any washing that might still be hanging outside.
Precautions taken as Wickham fire is attended to
Thus far, the police have started evacuating people from the area as a precaution. The Wickham fire is still being tended to as the firefighters fear the fire will travel to the petrol storage facility. This is located right next to the four-story building. If reached, the city can experience a catastrophic explosion.
Those who experience difficulty breathing are encouraged to consult a medical practitioner. As relayed by ABC News, the heat of the Wickham fire could be felt just meters away. Close-by streets have also been blocked as a result of the fire.
The building set alight is said to have lanolin-soaked timbers that are 100-years-old. Residents in some streets have still not been able to return home as the evacuation still stands.
The old iconic building was watched by residents going up in flames. The burning building was previously wool storage but is now said to be used as an office building.
