Melbourne targetted in new ISIS propaganda video

A new video by terror group Islamic State (ISIS) features scenes of Melbourne.

The video released this month titled The Impenetrable Fortress is typical of other call to arms propaganda produced but ISIS to stir up fear and support for its cause.

In the film, footage of Australia’s second biggest city, including images of the airport and St Paul’s Cathedral, are disturbingly edited in between footage of explosions and skirmishes in what appear to be battles involving the rogue organisation.

Melbourne is the only Australian city featured in the video.

In recent weeks ISIS has been in retreat across its self-proclaimed caliphate, particularly in areas around Mosul in Iraq where Australian forces have been operating as part of a US-led coalition supporting Iraqi forces.

“They’re hoping, it would seem, by putting Australian scenes in a propaganda video, somebody in Melbourne or Sydney will look at that and be tipped over the edge into trying to do something,” Islamic politics expert Professor Greg Barton of Deakin University said.

“While such materials are disturbing, Victoria Police is not aware of any direct threat to the Victorian community or infrastructure at this time,” a spokeswoman for the state’s police force said in a statement.
