Design Australia Group: Redefining Drafting as the engine of housing growth

Australia is under pressure to build homes faster, but design bottlenecks slow progress. Design Australia Group is fixing this by transforming drafting into a streamlined, scalable system for builders and developers.

Australia faces growing pressure to deliver homes faster and smarter. For builders and developers, one of the biggest obstacles is often design: limited libraries, slow turnarounds, or documentation that creates bottlenecks downstream. Design Australia Group is tackling this head-on, turning drafting into a systemised, scalable engine of construction.

Founded to Promote Excellence

Lisa and Cameron Yarker first entered the industry in 2003, later establishing Design Australia Group in 2009 in its current form to redefine how homes are designed and delivered. Their vision is to support builders with scalable design systems that enrich communities, enable growth, and withstand market pressures.

With more than 150 years of collective team experience, Design Australia Group is built on more than creativity. Its proprietary systems and services are engineered in-house to align directly with builder workflows, construction timelines, and compliance requirements.

“We saw too many builders slowed down by poor documentation,” says Lisa Yarker. “Our job is to give them plans and systems that keep their sales, preconstruction, and site teams moving in sync.”

Removing the Bottlenecks Builders Face

Builders consistently face four design bottlenecks: generic plan libraries that limit sales, costly customisation that delays progress, pre-construction queues that stretch into months, and documentation that misses what crews need on site.

Design Australia Group’s model addresses each of these. Fixed job categories, transparent SLAs, and builder-specific documentation logic create predictable outputs. Proprietary systems track job types and turnaround timeframes, ensuring both speed and consistency.

As Co-Founder Cameron Yarker explains: “We’re not just drafting. We’re the pre-construction partner builders scale with.”

Building with Purpose and Speed

Each year, Design Australia Group delivers over 700 home designs for builders, with a retention rate of more than 90 percent. The company has won awards for more than 40 designs, proof that volume and quality can co-exist when systems are built with purpose.

One builder client grew from just 20 homes per year to more than 400 annually within three years of adopting Design Australia Group’s plan libraries and documentation systems, evidence that the right design partner can transform capacity.

The process aligns with builder SOPs and site requirements. Documentation is construction-ready, meaning supervisors spend less time interpreting plans and more time running crews. This reduces rework, accelerates site starts, and keeps sales pipelines moving.

“Drafting isn’t a support role,” the team notes. “It’s the frontline of construction.”

Growing Talent for a Stronger Industry

Through the Design Australia Academy, the company invests in training and career pathways for drafting talent. This creates a pipeline of skilled professionals ready to work at the speed of the housing market.

By reframing drafting as a strategic, business-critical discipline, the Yarkers are building not only for their clients but for the industry at large.

The Long-Term Vision

Looking ahead, Design Australia Group’s vision is to be the most trusted, systemised, and scalable residential design firm in Australia, enabling builders to scale faster and shape the communities of tomorrow.
