Australian universities have rated exceptionally well in the latest QS World University Rankings.

Each year QS ranks the world’s universities, and compiling a list of the globe’s top 100 tertiary education institutions.

Eight Australian universities appear on the 2014 QS list, released this week, with five institutions classed in the top 50. Australian National University was the best ranked Aussie institution, coming in at 25th.

US and British colleges and universities dominated the list, filling out the top 11 spots between them. Four UK universities made the top five.

America’s famous MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) took the coveted prime position followed by the University of Cambridge, Imperial College London and Harvard University making up the top four with Oxford University and University College London sharing equal fifth spot.

Making the list carries great prestige given that according to webometries.info, a website specializing in the rankings of international universities, as of January 2014 there were at least 22,123 universities in the world.
