IT IS official. 2012 has been the wettest year on record in England.
The UK Met Office has confirmed that annual rainfall records show England has received the highest amount of rain this year since records began in 1910. It is predicted there is more to come before 2012 comes to an end.
A total average rainfall of 1095.8mm has fallen across England up until Thursday 27 December 2012.
Low pressure fronts from movement in the North Atlantic jet stream were considered the reason for the record levels of rain in England.
Andy Yeatman, spokesman for the Met Office, told the Daily Telegraph: “Since April we have had some really wet weather across England and that is largely a result of the shifting jet stream pattern.”
Further downpours and storms are expected until the New Year.
Andy Page, Chief Forecaster at the Met Office said: “A particularly deep area of low pressure will bring another spell of wet and windy weather across the UK later on Friday and into Saturday.
“We have issued severe weather warnings for the heavy rain and gales and will be monitoring the situation to keep everyone up-to-date with the latest picture through our forecasts and warnings.”
