Expats’ guide to styling a new rental home

Oh moving, the idea sounds exciting, but the execution – that’s another thing. If only we could skip to the part where everyone is relaxing on the sofa in their perfectly furnished home with everything organised to a tee.

It can be hard decorating a new house when you are renting, especially if you’re not planning on staying somewhere too long. As a tenant you rarely have permission or resources to change things. Many of us can’t stand moving, and we all know it’s hard work, but with a little forward planning you can reduce the stress of your big move and feel excited about a fresh start to your life.

1. Choose furniture to suit anything

Neutral furniture is a great choice because it’s versatile enough to be placed into any room so you can take it with you to any rental home. Neutral is very modern and if you want, rooms can always be spruced up with colour from cushions, flowers and art. However when it comes to the pricey stuff like beds and sofas, neutral is always safer. The bed frames over at Brosa for example, are gentle enough to suit any space, without being featureless and fading into the background.

2. Try and get furniture you can assemble and take apart

Tables and beds are almost always able to be pulled apart and reassembled, but these days you can get chairs and sofas that can also do it. This means you won’t have to worry about getting large bulky items through the house while smashing walls and angering your new housemates and neighbours. Just remember to have a tool kit handy. Technology is getting so cool you can also find mattresses that fold up neatly into a golf sized box.

3. Keep in mind what you can change

Generally when renting, light fixtures, shelves, curtains and blinds are property of the owner, so if you really want to change these, either make sure you get permission or make sure you store them somewhere safe for when you move again. Changing the lights and adding simple curtains are a great way to style and personalise your home

4. Get command hooks for artwork and organising

When you move into a new home you want to be able to showcase your artworks and memories from back home. Command hooks are great because when you take them off, they leave no trace. However these nifty things are known to strip paint off if you don’t take them off properly. So to ensure you get your bond back always pull the tab down and never toward you. These hooks are also a brilliant way to organise your power cords and hanging up towels.

5. Finishing touches

You’re here! You made it! But it can be really hard feeling at home when you’re so far away from it. Adding some fresh flowers or candles will add warmth and help fill in any empty space. Stack some wood into the fireplace or accessorise your coffee table with your favourite books. These last few details will remove sterility and make the atmosphere feel like it’s been lived in.
