Incredible footage as a fugitive alleged gunman is arrested by police after hijacking a news cameraman’s vehicle.
The drama unfolded on Wednesday on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, Australia, after Noosa Junction neighbours reported hearing gun shots in the early hours of the morning.
Seven News cameraman Peter Steer was on his way to cover the breaking story when he was waved down by a man riding a motor bike. At first the man was congenial and friendly.
“He got off his bike and approached me and said “I’ve got a story for you”. I said “Well mate, you better hurry because I’m going to a shooting”, and he said “Mate, I’m the shooter,”‘ Steer later recounted to Seven News.
The man then handed over his gun to Steer, broke down in tears and said he wanted to hand himself over to the police, all of which was sensationally captured on film. Steer called to notify the police.
But things quickly turned nasty as the agitated man took back possession of the gun, terrifyingly pointed it at Steel, stole his car and drove away before the police had arrived. Steer says he instinctively kept filming.
The veteran cameraman was then picked up by the police who chased the fugitive to a petrol service station in the nearby sleepy hinterland district of Doonan, where the alleged gunman had apparently deliberately crashed the car into some large LPG gas storage cylinders.
A witness identifying himself only as ‘Joe’ told ABC radio the man got out of the car and demanded a cigarette lighter, apparently intending to blow up the leaking gas cylinders.
The man was quickly subdued and arrested by Queensland police officers after a brief standoff, which was all recorded by the still filming Steer.
Mr Jordy Brook has been remanded in custody over the incident, facing four charges including one count of attempted murder. His case has been adjourned by the court till 16 December. No bail application has been lodged by Mr Brook’s legal representative.
