Building a school brand and engaging the community

Many people feel that schools and educational institutes are exempt from branding — which is far from true.

Nowadays schools need to differentiate themselves from their competitors and rivals, and building a strong brand that showcases their school spirit and its unique traits is one of the best ways to do so.

Frankly speaking, a ‘good school name’ is a reflection of how successful it has been in building its brand and putting forth its values and culture. The first step to doing so is to make sure that your school has the tools that are necessary for the task.

School merchandise 101

When it comes to school merchandise, there are numerous areas that can be included — such as school uniforms, sports uniforms, stationery, and so on. Essentially, anything that bears a school logo or its colors is a potential avenue for advancing that schools marketing and helping to build its brand.

In order to effectively help build up the brand of a school however, that merchandise needs to be memorable, unique, and stand out compared to what other schools are using. The idea behind school merchandise is to display the school’s identity and show it off — which is why generic merchandise that isn’t unique won’t be of much help.

Creating the right image

A big part of how effective merchandise can be in putting forth a school’s identity and values comes with creating the right image. The logo and school colors are of particular importance because they are elements that can be used in conjunction with a large variety of merchandise.

The trend nowadays is to emphasize colors more than the school logo. Gone are the days when huge school logos would be present on everything from uniforms to stationery — and today, it is more likely for both to include small logos and instead have the identity of the school clearly displayed via the color motif.

Another trend is to re-engineer the school logo to more modern equivalents that are generally simpler and streamlined as compared to some of the older school logos. With this sort of measure however, there could be a loss of identity and association — particularly among the alumni.

Strong alumni is a schools backbone

Many schools have begun to realize just how important a role their alumni can play in the school brand and when it comes to engaging the community. The identity of the school is reflected in its former students, and having them forge relationships with current students could be beneficial too.

School branded merchandise is an excellent way to reach out to alumni members, which is why many schools use them as alumni gifts. It may be a small token, but it could have very attractive benefits for the school in terms of exposure and also in fostering a sense of community and belonging amongst the alumni members.

All of these tools could really help a school to stand out from the others out there. If used properly, branded merchandise is a key ingredient in helping a school market itself, establish a strong brand and a good name within the community that emphasizes its strengths and values.
