Key jobs in Australia – IT

IT remains one of the most in-demand and fast-paced employment sectors on the planet, and Australia is no exception

IT Jobs in Australia – Sector Overview

IT remains one of the most in-demand and fast-paced employment sectors on the planet, and Australia is no exception. All businesses need IT support and the industry is crucial to running a well-oiled economy. While outsourcing has affected the Australian employment market in much the same way as other western nations, there will always be demand for migrants with strong skills and a creative approach. A report issued in March 2012 by the Australia Computer Society stated that Australia’s IT industry will create 35,000 more jobs over the next two years, many of which will need to be filled by migrants as Australian universities have seen a significant decline in the number of relevant graduates. In particular, those with skills working with mobile phone applications, HTML 5 and mobile/PC compatibility and applications would be in demand. There is also demand for project managers and senior analysts. The continued development of cloud computing also meant those with mainframe skills were highly valued.

IT Jobs in Australia – Location

Most major employers are based in Sydney and Melbourne, as well as state capitals for public sector jobs. The New South Wales government is looking at promoting Sydney as a digital and IT hub.

IT Jobs in Australia – Skills and Qualifications

Qualifications and/or experience related to the intended area of employment are important when seeking work. The Australian Computer Society assesses the skills of those wishing to migrate to Australia and have their skills and qualifications recognised. Overseas qualifications are assessed against the Australian Qualifications Framework, as is work experience. The ACS can also certify vendor certificates from the likes of Microsoft, Novell, Cisco and Orcale.

IT Jobs in Australia – Pay

IT is a well paid industry, with few jobs dipping under the $40,000 mark. The average IT and telecommunications professionals can expect to earn a shade over $100,000, with experienced project managers, security experts, software architects, managers and top sales staff able to command at least double that.
