FACEBOOK has revealed the top mentions, songs and check-ins in Australia this year, with One Direction topping the list of the most talked about thing on the social media forum.

The popular British pop group edged out last year’s number one, planking, to claim the top prize. The list also shows Australians embracing local talent, with Big Brother and The Voice coming in second and third.

The global sporting event of the year, the 2012 London Olympics, makes it to fourth. Other hot topics of conversation included The Hunger Games and Fifty Shades of Grey.

Surprisingly, given its popularity on YouTube with over 900 million views, Gangnam Style only makes it in at ninth on the list of top Facebook mentions.

It is a list dominated by pop culture and sporting events, in contrast to last year’s list which featured a number of current affairs and news items in the most talked about category. This included Cyclone Yasi, Victorian Floods and Osama Bin Laden.

The stats also reveal where Australians like to spend their free time, with the most checked-in location for the year being the Melbourne Cricket Ground. It was a list again focused on sport, with other popular venues including the Rod Laver Arena, Suncorp Stadium and ANZ Stadium.

The top songs of 2012 on Facebook in Australia was ranked by the number of people who first listened to the song in 2012. Bon Iver’s ‘Skinny Love’ topped the list, followed by pop tune ‘Call Me Maybe’. Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ made it in at number 4.
