Football Federation Australia (FFA) released the draw this week, with the league’s first match to be played between Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United at Olympic Park on August 25.
Other first round matches include Perth Glory travelling to Brisbane to take on Queensland Roar, while the Newcastle Jets will face the New Zealand Knights. The Hyundai A-League 2007 Grand Final will be played on Sunday 18 February 2007.
FFA chief John O’Neill expects the competition to go up a gear from its highly successful first season, and understands that the Socceroos participation in the biggest event in the sport come June will help increase the popularity of football in Australia.
“After the exhilaration of last season there is huge anticipation building already for season two,” O’Neill said. “Running off the back of the Qantas Socceroos first appearance at the World Cup in 32 years the Hyundai A-League will once again give Australia sports fans the opportunity to see quality live football.
The champions and premiers from the 2006-07 season will have the opportunity to be the first Australian Clubs to participate in the 2007 AFC Asian Champions League. www.sportal.com.au
FFA targets senior Socceroos
Football Federation of Australia (FFA) is looking to entice several senior national squad players to return to Australia after this year’s World Cup in Germany. The second Hyundai A-League season will begin in August, more than a month after the World Cup finals have concluded, and FFA’s head of operations, Matt Carroll, says he would like to see some of the experienced Socceroos back in Australia.
“We’d like to encourage, and we’ll see how we go, some of the Socceroos out of – after the World Cup games to perhaps come back – I hate using the word retirement, but certainly come back through the A-League as they reach the end of their careers,” he said. “So there is an opportunity there to involve those marquee players.”
