Maybe you are dreaming of a trip to New York over Christmas, or you want to tick a visit to the Grand Canyon off your bucket list. Either way, you will need to have the correct travel authorization for your trip.
What you need
Of course, you will require a valid passport for international travel, so that should be the very first thing that you check.
Travelling to the US requires an extra level of travel authorization, often referred to as a visa. However, the traditional visa requirements have changed to make it a bit easier for travellers to visit the US, both for tourism and for business.
Applying for ESTA
The Visa Waiver Program is an online ESTA application guide that you must complete if you are visiting the US for less than 90 days. It includes a number of sections covering questions related to personal information and other details such as criminal convictions. It is recommended that you submit your ESTA application at least 72 hours before you are due to fly.
Make sure that you check the weather forecast in the part of the US that you are visiting. The weather varies massively from one state to another, so in order to make sure that you pack the right clothes and footwear, do your research. Of course, the weather can change but don’t pack all winter clothes for a heatwave in California or pack a suitcase full of beachwear if you’re headed to Alaska!
If you are thinking about driving whilst you are on your trip then make sure that you are aware of the differences between your local driving laws and the ones for the US state that you are visiting. As well as driving on different sides of the road, there are a number of other significant differences that you may need to be aware of to ensure safe driving whilst in the US.
Other local laws
It is worthwhile checking the local state laws for the area that you are visiting just to be on the safe side. The laws across the different states vary, so what you think is okay to do in one state might get you into bother in another state. The last thing that you want to be doing on your trip is getting into trouble with the law.
Even if you are used to hot weather, your skin will not be used to the US weather so make sure that you stay fully protected by taking enough sunscreen with you. If you forget it, you can always head to Walmart or another grocery store to pick some up but always take some with you just in case.
