Australian bands topped the biggest music poll in Australia’s history, when Powderfinger frontman and prolific rocker Bernard Fanning edged out fellow Aussie Ben Lee to take out the top spot in Triple J’s Hottest 100.
As we bunker down for the London winter, some of the world’s biggest bands, artists and DJs are on their way to Australia for the summer festival season. TIM MCNAMARA takes a look at what we are missing.

“The deeper recesses of the repertoire have always fascinated me,” explains Piers Lane, “but it’s wrong to assume — as people occasionally have — that I’m only interested in playing rare or neglected music.
To coincide with the exhibition, Memory as Landscape, October Gallery will be screening a series of films dedicated to and about indigenous Australia. The two short films which will be shown on Tuesday 17 January at 7.30pm are Yellow Fella and Green Bush.
