Moving can be a complicated process, especially if you are moving across state lines.

1 – Declutter in advance

The less stuff you need to lug around the simpler the moving process is going to be. Therefore, it’s a good idea to get rid of everything you no longer need in the lead-up to the move. This could be small stuff like random items that have been cluttering your junk drawer for years, as well as bigger items like old hardware, appliances, and furniture that you don’t use often enough to justify keeping.

You can get rid of old stuff through a rubbish removal service, by throwing it away or selling it in the used market. If you don’t want to commit to throwing certain items away just yet, you can also put them in storage and figure out what to do later.

Either way, It’s best to get rid of stuff you don’t need soon in the moving process. The amount of stuff you need to move will also affect the cost of the moving process, as this furniture removal volume calculator shows.

2 – Choose the right company

Unless you plan on starting from scratch, you’ll need a furniture removal company to help move everything you own to your new home. This is one of the cases where you want to avoid the cheapest option, as working with a qualified and reputable team will make the moving process much easier, especially when dealing with bulky items like pianos or pool tables.

Some furniture removers will even help you dispose of items you don’t want, as well as help you pack up the boxes for the move.

3 – Get a checklist

Moving from one home to another involves dozens of small but necessary tasks, and it’s easier to let something slip through the cracks if you’re trying to keep track of them all from memory. Get a home moving checklist so you can tick boxes as you complete important steps, such as packing important documents, booking the necessary house cleaning or painting services, setting a date to activate the utilities in your new home, and more.

Having and following a checklist will also help combat that nagging feeling that you might be forgetting something on the day of the move. Something is reassuring about having an actual list you can check and double-check to make sure you aren’t forgetting anything.

4 – Help the movers

If you hired a moving company, ask their team what you can do to make the process smoother. They might suggest that you label the boxes so they know where to place them, for example. Or give you tips on how to better pack certain objects.

5 – Book in advance

It’s easier to get better quotes and go price shopping when you book in advance. This applies not only to the moving company you decide to hire but also to other service providers, like home cleaning or inspection services.
