The Battle for the Premier League’s Fifth Champions League Spot: Who Will Prevail?

8 May 2025

Gambling is prominent among both Australian and UK players. Needless to say, both countries aren’t doing too shabby when it comes to casinos and other forms of betting. In fact, Australia is among the top gambling countries globally, and the United Kingdom isn’t running too far behind. On top of that, the market for online casinos, sports betting, and other forms of wagering.

The entire world has suffered, and in some ways, benefited from the changes in the past few years. Just the pandemic alone drastically affected the gambling market and caused some shocking spikes, especially in demand for online casinos. Understandable, as players have lost the opportunity to enjoy brick-and-mortar casinos. And even now, as gambling facilities are opening back up, most prefer the convenience of better from the comfort of their own home.

It’s a fascinating topic to study, even if you have no interest in gambling or casinos.

Australian gambling market

Most gambling facilities in Australia remain shut down due to Covid-19 regulations, so it’s no surprise that online casino operators are thriving, and internet sportsbooks are doing better than ever. And although some forms of online gambling are still prohibited for Australian players, there are still tons of other betting entertainment titles that bring some gamblers and operators millions of dollars. Did you know that almost 40% of people in Australia gamble regularly, and approximately 80% participate or have participated in at least one type of betting form?

Looking at approximate statistics, most regular gamblers spend up to $1,000 each year. Let’s do some math. If we take all the players that play regularly (let’s round it to 40%) and say each one spends one grand a year, that would mean that $1,014,400,000,0 is spent annually on gambling. Sure, it’s a ballpark figure, but it sure is an astronomical number. Let’s not forget that the gambling industry in AU increased by 62% in the past years. Just in 2018, the AU government gained over 6.2 billion AUD from the gambling industry, and the numbers are only growing.

The United Kingdom gambling market

Players in the United Kingdom have contributed to a total gross of more than 14.4 billion British pounds by making bets in casinos and participating in online gambling activities. That’s a drastic increase considering that in 2011 the number was only 8.4 billion British pounds. At least 32.2% of the population gambles weekly and drops 2.9 British pounds every week on various forms of casino entertainment. There are currently around 66.65 million people in the UK, which means at least 24 million individuals contribute to the gambling industry in the country. Online gambling alone has 2.1million players registered on legal internet casinos.

Predictions for the AU and the UK gambling markets

The growth of the gambling market in Australia and the United Kingdom does not seem to be slowing down. Although gambling facilities are still struggling to do business, we see a few of them open back up with strict regulations and new rules for players. So there’s no way to tell how it will go down with brick-and-mortar casinos, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see people enjoying their freedom and taking advantage and going out to bet some money after the restrictions are lifted.

One prediction that could almost be deemed certain is that the Australian online gambling market will reach its peak before 2025. And from then, we can only imagine what can happen. But people love to gamble, and perhaps we will see innovations that will bring even more money to the industry. Everything seems to be more digitized and done on the internet, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see incredible growth in online casinos for many years to come.

The United Kingdom gambling market also doesn’t sleep, but we may very well see a decrease in successful numbers in the following years compared to Australia. The market may have a complete turnaround and perhaps even plummet due to the new laws and regulations that are being pushed for players and casino operators. Due to severe gambling addictions and money losses, the government decided to make some changes to eliminate the issues. However, the new rules may not prevent operators from finding loopholes, and people will find ways to gamble regardless.
