Fish and chips now more popular than burgers for Australians’ fastfood demands

White meat over red meat, please.

Fish and chips

The British staple of fish and chips is among the most popular fastfood among Australians during lockdown.

Recent statistics from Deliveroo – one of the country’s key food-delivery services – shows that Australians have effectively tweaked their eating habits somewhat during the coronavirus pandemic.

Orders for fish and chips have increased by almost 600 percent in the last month or so – and is currently the app’s prolificly searched meals.

Aussies are eating dinner earlier, too, nowadays. They have brought their last formal meal of the day forward by 40-plus minutes.

“Where average orders on a weekday would usually peak at approximately 7.06pm, this has now moved earlier, to 6.23pm, suggesting Aussies might be daydreaming about their dinners straight after they’ve eaten their lunch,” said Deliveroo consumer communications Joe Satari.

“We’ve kept a close eye on customer trends and how people’s tastebuds, and dining habits, have shifted during these unprecedented times. The importance of food, and sharing it with loved ones has become more important than ever before and we’re glad that Deliveroo is able to bring these little moments of joy into homes across Australia.”

Burgers used to be the most ordered meal on the app. Ice cream orders, meanwhile, have jumped by almost 140 percent – and Fridays have surpassed Saturdays as the busiest day for Deliveroo orders in Australia.

“It seems that Friday night at home is becoming foodie night across the country and the weekend is starting earlier where food is concerned,” added Satari.

Group meals, too, have overtaken single meal orders.

Deliveroo in the UK

Deliveroo is available in the United Kingdom as well – and recently delivered more than 500 meals to to parts of Ipswich as part of their plan to provide 500,000 meals to frontline National Health Service workers.

“It’s truly heartwarming to see the way the UK have shown their support for our heroic NHS workers during these unprecedented times. We’re proud that with the generous contributions made by our customers and corporate donors, we have provided hospitals in Ipswich with a hot meal, to make sure doctors and nurses working around the clock have one less thing to worry about,” said a Deliveroo spokesperson.
