Buy Barcodes is here to answer all of your questions on how to buy a barcode and give you all that you need to successfully publish your magazine. This does not have to be a laborious or complicated process. Buy Barcodes aims to make it as simple as possible for each of our clients to reach publishing success.

How do you do it?

The first step is simply to apply for an ISSN number and barcode for your first issue. This International Standard Serial Number is a unique number that every library and retailer utilises in order to differentiate amongst all the different serial publications that have been published worldwide.

This is a necessary step in publishing a magazine or any other serial publication such as a newspaper or online journal. You must apply for this number through the international database of ISSN numbers, which is situated in Paris. It is best to allow around two weeks for this ISSN number to be allocated to you.

In order to apply, you will need to provide them with details such as the title, the name of the publisher, the beginning date, place of publication, your name and address as well as your contact details. With this ISSN number, libraries and retailers can control their stock levels and regulate the movement of their inventory of magazines and other periodicals.

Periodicals

What is a periodical? A periodical is any publication that comes out on a regular basis, such as a newspaper, a yearbook or a magazine. By applying for an ISSN number, you will be in a much better place to be able to promote your magazine in the tough publishing world of today. Your magazine will be listed in the International Serials Directory Database and this will boost awareness and publicity surrounding your magazine.

After receiving your ISSN number, the next step is to purchase your ISSN barcode. This barcode will include information regarding the origin country, as well as your details.  This barcode will always start with 977. This number shows that this publication is a periodical.  What is the difference between ISSN barcodes and normal retail barcodes? These two barcodes are not the same.  They differ, because the ISSN number actually becomes part of the ISSN barcode. This is not the case with retail barcodes.

Another important question to ask is how many ISSN numbers would one need?  Most periodicals only need one ISSN number. The only time that you may need more than one ISSN number is if you are publishing your magazine in more than one format, or more than one language. Each different format and language would then require its own ISSN number.
