The dos and don’ts of living abroad – Top things you need to know before moving to a new country

Moving is tough even when it’s right down the street, let alone when you put a thousand leagues between your current location and your future home.

That can bring a lot of complications with it, but thanks to articles like this one, living in Singapore for example shouldn’t be as complicated as it was for someone 20 years ago that was attempting relocation to Singapore.

What’s there to know?

There’s quite a bit to know actually, because you’re talking of completely trading off your own culture and lifestyle for one you’ve never knew prior. Depending on how far away you’re going, it will get stranger and stranger. This comes with a strange land, strange language and of course, strangers. We’re going to give you a few tips on how to deal with all of them.

Don’t carry your whole life on your back

When you’re leaving home, you are going to pack some things with you. It’s very important that you don’t pack everything you’ve ever owned. There are two sides to this. One is the physical, practical side, as it wouldn’t be very easy or necessary to pack a lot of things. If you need more clothes you can buy some from the local establishments. Whatever you need, chances are they’ll have it where you’re moving as well. The other one is the mental aspect. Packing everything will hinder your adaptation process. You would be clinging on to the past, and it would prohibit you from accepting your current situation.

Don’t assume anything and learn as much as you can

One big mistake that people make when they move to a new place is that they assume they know some things based on what they’ve read online and seen on TV. When you are moving to a new, distant land, assume nothing. Open your mind and heart and be ready to learn as much as you can. Learn about the place and about the people, and most importantly, learn the language. It’s a whole other ball game once you know their language. That’s when you truly start to be part of your new home.

Stay true to yourself as you try to blend in

You must find balance between retaining what you’ve learned in life back home and what you could learn by adapting to your new surroundings. Don’t just turtle in a community of your own people from back home. Make the locals your people as well, since you’re living in their country now. Learn from them and blend in. Also, don’t try too hard to hide or erase your origins. You come from a different place with a different culture. Just because you have been given the opportunity to expand to these aspects of life doesn’t mean you should just swap out the “old ones”. Grow as a person but stay true to who you are and where you come from.
