Federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten was involved in assisting the victims of a head-on collision on Thursday.
Mr Shorten came to the aid of a 33-year-old mother and her two-year-old child following the accident in the NSW Hunter Valley.
According to the ABC, the Labor leader and local Labor candidate Meryl Swanson comforted the pair until emergency services arrived. Later, they were driven home in his car.
The driver of the other vehicle in the accident, a 21-year-old woman, was taken to hospital. She reportedly suffered head injuries but is in a stable condition.
Mr Shorten suspended his campaign for the rest of the day as a result of the incident, cancelling his scheduled mall walkabout and afternoon media conference.
According to reports, Mr Shorten’s motorcade was travelling along Cessnock Road and began to pull over for a scheduled election announcement. Another car went to overtake the convoy as it slowed and smashed head-on into a car travelling in the opposite direction.
“The Leader of the Opposition’s priority is the wellbeing of those involved in the accident,” a Labor spokeswoman said, confirming the suspension of Mr Shorten’s campaign for the day.
