Johnny Depp and his wife Amber Heard have publicly apologised for the smuggling of their dogs in to Australia and urge travellers to respect the country’s strict bio-security measures.
In a video made and released by the pair ahead of today’s court hearing into the affair, Heard describes Australia as “a wonderful island with a treasure trove of unique plants, animals and people”.
“It has to be protected,” a dour looking husband Depp chimes in.
“Australia is free of many pests and diseases that are commonplace around the world. That is why Australia has to have such strong bio-security laws,” Heard continues.
“And Australians are just as unique, both warm and direct,” Depp says, adding, “When you disrespect Australian law, they will tell you firmly.”
“I am truly sorry that Pistol and Boo were not declared,” Heard confesses.
“Protecting Australia is important,” she finishes.
Declare everything when you enter Australia,” Depp concludes.
Heard was dealt a one-month, $1000 good behaviour bond for illegally smuggling the two small dogs into Australia aboard a private jet in 2015 when she came to visit Depp. No conviction was recorded.
Depp was in Australia at the time to film the latest installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise.
The incident sparked international headlines when Australia’s agriculture minister Barnaby Joyce angrily voiced his disapproval, suggesting the pooches may have to be put down.
Following the publication of the video today, Joyce stated on Facebook: “Depp and Heard make a public statement highlighting the importance of biosecurity in Australia. The consequences of a disease outbreak could have been terrifying. We can’t take the risk.”
