Discover the somewhat unusual hidden gems of New York City

Places like the Empire State Building and Time Square will always be favourites for tourists and locals alike, but there are a few hidden gems New York has to offer that will definitely fascinate and intrigue you.

The New York Earth Room
Since 1977, there has been a 335 square meter room in SoHo filled with 55cms of dirt. This interior sculpture is a permanent installation by deceased American artist and sculptor, Walter De Maria. Imagine the conversation you‘re going to have with family and friends after telling them you saw a work of art that was basically dirt in a room.

‘No Pants Subway Ride’
Started in 2002 by the improvisational theatre group ‘Improv Everywhere’, the ‘No Pants Subway Ride’ has now become an annual tradition. It started with seven guys in New York who basically rode the subway with no pants on. Now, tens of thousands people participate every year from around the world.

The Gastronauts
This is a dinner club like no other. With a menu like grasshoppers, brains, intestines and all that good stuff, it is definitely a dinner experience for adventurers. The fact that they’re constantly fully booked no doubt means that there are a lot of patrons ready to try a few new palatable dishes.

Renwick Smallpox Hospital
On Roosevelt Island, this abandoned hospital is infamous for being haunted. Its beautiful ruins and fascinating history lends to this belief. Haunted or not, this hospital makes for a fantastic subject for photography enthusiasts.

U Thant Island
Located in the East River, just south of Roosevelt Island, this 30 X 61cm island has been deemed a sanctuary for migrating birds. Although access is prohibited to protect the flying visitors, you can see this interesting island from different angles around the city.
