The Financial Times reported this week that the Australian music streaming company Guvera has successfully negotiated the purchase of UK giant Tesco’s Blinkbox music service.
It’s a big move for the company who are looking to expand in to European markets after success in Australia and Asia. With Blinkbox Music boasting over two million users, Guvera is in a fantastic position to make a name for itself in Britain and will become a serious competitor in the music downloading industry.
Who are Guvera?
Guvera was founded in 2008 and operates in 20 countries worldwide. The company has agreements with music labels and uses advertising as a means of providing free legal music streaming services. It certainly appears as though they have big plans to expand into the UK and European markets, and with its success in Asian and Australasian markets, this will be an Aussie company to watch in 2015.
Why is Tesco selling Blinkbox Music?
Tesco revealed earlier this year that it was in talks to sell off non-essential businesses in order to focus on their food stores earlier this year. After a consistent drop in sales profits it has been necessary to also sell Blinkbox books, however reports from the financial times indicate that Tesco is still looking for potential buyers after unsuccessful talks with Waterstones.
