A 30-year-old Blacktown woman was refused bail and will be charged with attempted murder after her newborn baby was discovered in a drain on Sunday.
The baby’s mother was due to appear in Blacktown local court on Monday.
The baby boy, who is about 7 days old, is believed to have been dropped in the drain a mere 24 hours after his birth and was discovered by cyclist who thought they were rescuing a kitten. That would mean he had survived in the drain for five days before he was found on Sunday morning.
The baby is in a serious but stable condition at the Westmead children’s hospital.
According to Police statements, the infant was pushed through the drain’s narrow opening and dropped about 2.4 metres. It took several people to lift the heavy concrete slab covering the drain.
The little boy is now in the care of the NSW Family and Community Services (FACS) minister.
