Our London: Spotlight on Fulham – Top 5

OUR LONDON | In this London guide an Aussie Times writer brings you a top five list from their favourite neighbourhood. Fulham may be an Antipodean hub but as EMMA BROWN can attest Australians still experience England at its finest and funnest through the local cafés, markets and pubs.

I’M a walking cliché.

I moved to London from Perth two years ago to experience life out here, to live the dream, to indulge in the English way.

How do I do this? I reside in Fulham, a suburb well known for its Aussie and Kiwi population.

Despite the odds I am happy to say, even though the majority of my friends here are from the Southern Hemisphere, I do have a few token English friends in Fulham. And I find it to be a really lovely place to call home.

Here are my Top 5 places to eat, drink and socialise in Fulham:

1. My favourite spots to hang out in Fulham begin with the local cafés, the majority of them have seating outside, where you can bask in those one or two good days come summer. Moosh Café located on Jerdan Place its outstanding! The staff there are friendly, the food is amazing and fresh and the funky interior makes for a pleasant atmosphere in which to sip your healthy smoothies in.

2. North End Road Markets — The place where Fulham meets Bali. This road really is a mixed bag, but you can’t help but love it! The fresh food markets with its interesting vendors make for a real treat to walk down. It’s the place you can buy your fresh blueberries for breakfast, and your DIY necessities all in the one place.

The pubs around my neck of the woods nearly complete the list.

3. The Elk Bar, the token antipodean bar offers a big beer garden and BBQ during the summer months and every Thursday you can indulge in far too many drinks with their £2.95 mojito night Thursday. A night of fun that no one remembers, resulting in a hangover you won’t forget!

4. The Durrell, located of Fulham Road, this pub is the perfect venue to kick up your heels and relax with a pint, or even get up and groove to the live music. In comfortable surroundings with a great choice on tap, it is my choice for a Friday night drink and boogie.

5. The Cock Tavern, yet another well-known publican in Fulham. The Cock is my favourite (no, it’s not for the name) but for its interesting décor. Penguin book wallpaper, chandeliers hanging from the ceilings, half circle chairs, mirrors stuck to the roof, it has it all. It certainly makes for a talking point during a boring date.
