Drunk pig could be honoured with a plaque

Swino the wild pig who infamously stole beer from tourists and died in October could get a commemorative plaque at a WA rest stop.

THE infamous beer-guzzling feral pig who died two months ago could get a plaque at a West Australian rest stop commemorating his unusual life.

The pig, dubbed “Swino” by locals, made headlines for stealing six-packs of beer and searching bins for snacks left by tourists in the Pilbara region.

He had been hunted after raiding campsites at the De Grey River rest area in the South Hedland region, and died in October after being hit by a truck near Port Hedland.

Fionna Findley of Main Roads told AAP on Monday that the idea of erecting a plaque was suggested as a way of encouraging drivers to pull over at rest stops to avoid becoming fatigued.

She said it was part of a wider Main Roads initiative out of Kalgoorlie that was looking at ways of getting people to pull over at rest stops.

Ms Findley said the idea was still in the early stages of planning, but generating the funding would be difficult, so public contributions were welcome.
