Top five reasons why businesses should go green

With energy efficiency and rising costs of utilities at the forefront of many minds, it’s no wonder people all over the country are taking a look at their habits and seeing what changes can be made for the benefit of the environment and their pockets.

WHETHER you’re looking at how to make changes at home or in the office, every little helps. If everyone in the country did their bit for the environment, we would see considerable improvement in the reduction of carbon emissions and the growing cost of energy will not be as big an issue because we will have clamped down on our individual usage.

With new government targets aiming to lower carbon emissions, it’s now the duty of homes and businesses everywhere to become more energy efficient. With approximately a quarter of the UK’s carbon emissions coming from our businesses, industries and workplaces, it’s important for all to contribute to the overall objectives, whether you’re part of a small enterprise or a larger conglomerate.

As far as businesses are concerned, there are many reasons why it would be advantageous to go green and consider the environment a little more than they are already. Every business is different and they can all do their bit for the planet in their own ways. Assessing performance and evaluating where there is space for change will help business owners to understand what aspects of their working life need to be targeted. Regardless of the industry you’re in though, the reasons for change remain the same. Whether you’re a business owner or a staff member who wants to use their initiative to pitch new ideas, read on to help you to understand why it would be an excellent move.

For the environment Fairly obvious, but the benefits to the environment are massive. The impact we have on our planet is no secret and any change in the daily behaviour of a business, such as reducing energy consumption and thinking more about energy saving incentives, will have a direct effect on the preservation of our world.

For the balance sheets We have seen several newsworthy reports of big, international companies such as the Co-op and M&S saving hundreds of thousands of pounds a year on their energy bills. By switching to energy-saving processes and being smart about what energy we use, businesses big and small can see savings too. You can imagine how much of an improvement you will see on our bank balance with a little hard work.

For the employees As energy efficiency becomes a standard aspect of daily life, you will find that your employees will be proud of working for a green company, which increases morale and staff loyalty.

For your customers More and more customers are tempted to use the services and buy their products from greener businesses, meaning you’re more likely to secure new business if you’re actively being green.
