Topdeck Travel festival manager Amelia Lawrence explores the sights and delights of Iberia.
The Ancient Greeks originally discovered the Iberian Peninsula by voyaging westward.
Today, most of us do it by travelling south, through Europe, to reach this phenomenal region. Encompassing modern-day states Portugal, Spain, Andorra, Gibraltar and Morocco (and a small part of France), this region has it all – delicious foods, stunning scenery, and sunshine galore!
This region is a treasure trove for travellers, whether their idea of a perfect holiday involves relaxing on the beach, taking in stunning architecture or simply mixing with the locals.
Over the centuries a number of different conquerors have called Iberia their home, from the Romans, to Germanic tribes, and even the Moors from North Africa.
This melting pot of cultures is still evident today, where you can find Moorish decorations on Romanesque buildings, delicious foods combining Portuguese and Moroccan flavours, and a relaxed way of life which accepts new travellers with open arms.
Just remember, that no matter where you go in Iberia, be prepared to spend the day exploring, and the night socialising with the locals. No matter how warm the days, the evenings heat up with late dinners, all night bars and hot nightclubs where even the quietest of travellers will want to party until dawn!
