Four of the best ways to travel Australia

Australia offers a lot of beautiful scenery, bustling cities, and exciting places to visit. Here it is possible to experience things that simply don’t exist elsewhere, like the Great Barrier Reef. But what is the best way to explore it all?

Risk Awareness for International Travellers – What Australians Should Know Before Entering Multi-State Regions

10 December 2025

Of course, not everyone will have the same tastes, but one of these four ways to travel Australia is bound to strike a chord with any traveller.

Cruise The Coast

There is an old joke that cities are only found around the edges of the Australian coast because there are so many deadly animals in the centre of the country. It is certainly possible to explore many of the big Australian cities from the coastline, which is why it is such a great idea to try a coastal cruise. These can start off from a big city like Brisbane, as in this example, and then move along the coast to other areas of interest. In a short period of time they can cover a lot of ground, as well as showing off the beauty of the oceans surrounding Australia.

Travel By Train

It is possible to see a lot of Australia by train, and this may offer some of the most exciting vistas of any option. Travellers can simply sit back and relax while the country flashes by their windows, moving from city to city or to smaller stops along the way. It is even possible to get a Discovery Pass which allows travel between all of the Rail Australia stations at an unlimited rate within a certain period of time, such as 14 days or a certain amount of months.

Hire A Car

Backpacking is a favourite idea for many gap year students, but it is certainly not practical for everyone. In fact, some people worry about whether it is safe or not. A good way to get around this with a similar travel experience is to do a road trip instead. A group of friends or a family would be equally suited to this kind of holiday, which gives the chance to travel wherever and whenever throughout Australia. A car represents freedom, which cannot be offered to the same extent by other options.

Take a Tour

This option is perhaps not as popular with younger generations, but for the older groups, it is certainly a viable idea. There are plenty of companies which operate tours around Australia, taking in the major cities as well as parts of the outback. They will travel to major tourist destinations and ensure that everyone has the key holiday experiences that just have to be done in Australia. It is very restrictive however, with timelines and schedules that must be kept.

While each of these methods of travel has their pros and cons, it will be down to the individual traveller to decide which one suits them best. It also depends on how much budget is available, as some options will be more expensive than others – and how much time can be spent in order to really get the most out of the trip.
