This weekend, Saturday August 8th, down at Motspur Park in Wimbledon, the West London Wildcats are due to meet the only team to have defeated them this AFL London season.
The North London Lions put on a great show last weekend against the mighty Wandsworth Demons, kicking a goal in the final seconds of the game to break the draw and find their place in the 2015 AFL London Grand Final.
With the three powerhouses of AFL London being the Wildcats, Lions and Demons it was destined to be between the Lions and Demons to take it to the Wildcats on the biggest stage.
Round five was the first meeting between the Wildcats and the Lions this year. The Wildcats won it by a mere 15 points. Compared to their 100 plus point average, it was a very close game for the ‘Cats.
Fast-forward to round nine and the Lions turned the table on the Wildcats, coming away with a shock 10-point win to break the favourite’s perfect season.
The West London Wildcats have dominated the AFL London competition for many years, with no signs of slowing down. But as the Lions proved just a few weeks ago, the boys from West London are definitely beatable and this weekend’s big finale is hotly anticipated.
Festivities are kicking off at 10.30am with the first bounce in the Social division, witnessing the South London Demons (Wandsworth Demons’ clubmates) take on the Ealing Emus (West London Wildcats’ clubmates). The Conference division grand final follows at midday with the Regent Park Lions (North London Lions) versus the Shepherds Bush Raiders (West London Wildcats). The Women’s Grand Final between Wandsworth Demons and the Wimbledon Hawkettes is at 2pm with the big men’s Premiership showdown at 3.30pm.
Some intense rivalries and match-ups will make for a great day of AFL footy, so get down there and support the guys and girls involved!
