Only in Australia. Motorists on the country’s most famous landmark were startled on their way to work on Tuesday morning as a wallaby made its way into town.
The apparently lost marsupial bounced across the Sydney Harbour Bridge at around 5am.
“I couldn’t believe what I was seeing,” a caller to Sydney radio station 2GB, Michelle, said.
“I was so worried about the poor little thing.
“It was just hopping northbound in lane eight.
“I thought ‘No, no way do you see a kangaroo in the city like that, I’ve only seen them in the country’.”
Police gave chase as the wallaby (not a kangaroo) crossed the bridge from north to south, ending up on the Cahill Expressway overlooking the city’s iconic Circular Quay.
“There was a police car following it at a really slow pace and there were a lot of cars behind it,” another 2GB caller reported.
The adventurous marsupial was eventually apprehended by police and escorted to nearby Taronga Zoo for interrogation and a check up. Although stressed, it was reportedly in good health and unharmed.
So, now when someone asks ‘Do kangaroos use the Harbour Bridge?’ you can confidently say ‘Not sure about kangaroos, but wallabies most certainly do’.
