Some of you might be familiar with OCR technology and some might not. Just so everyone is on the same page, let’s take a moment to go over what OCR is and what it’s used for. So, OCR, or Optic Character Recognition, is a technology that allows software using it, in association with modern devices, to recognize characters on images. What this means is that the text on a picture can be scanned and transformed into a standard text which can be edited and manipulated as any other text. In fact, it’s pretty much instant, give or take a couple of seconds needed for the software to process the scanned image. So if there’s a piece of text on an image that you want to note down, you no longer have to copy it word for word. People also take picture of the image containing the text they need, but that’s usually resulting in a poor quality text. Not to mention that this method doesn’t let you edit it.

The user of OCR technology isn’t the only party that benefits tremendously. The environment also gains a lot by not having as much garbage or residue paper being spread everywhere. Using OCR helps with the digitalization of all documents and texts, which means that less paper is needed, which ultimately means that less trees need to be cut down. It’s a domino effect in reverse, and everyone wins by having all your texts on computers and digital canvases like tablets and phones instead of actually paper.

Copying text often times results in errors and typos, simply because it’s human nature to make mistakes. Scanning a text and replicating it digitally however means that there just isn’t any room for mistakes. This can help a lot with keeping information accurate and at a professional level.
Fidelity
We mentioned that people tend to take pictures of images that have pieces of text on them. This might be an acceptable alternative for those that aren’t yet aware of OCR. However, there are a lot of variables when this method is used such as the screen size or its resolution. If you need to send a text to a friend that uses a phone with a relatively small screen with a poor resolution, the image will be indecipherable. Using OCR brings fidelity to the scan meaning that they will be able to read a digitally rendered text file on any screen.
