Tony Abbott was like heroin, says gleeful John Oliver at Emmys

Political comedian and avid Tony Abbott watcher, John Oliver, thanked Australia for providing him with so much material, as he celebrated the demise of the now former prime minister.

Aussie entertainment reporter Angela Bishop (daughter of recently deposed Speaker of the House cum helicopter aficionado, Bronwyn Bishop, no less) caught up with the Last Week Tonight host as he sauntered down the red carpet at the 2015 Emmy Awards.

“Ding dong, Tony is dead,” Oliver beamed about last week’s overthrow of Tony Abbott by his in-house nemesis, Malcolm Turnbull.

Bishop asked Oliver if he would thank Australia for all the material if he won an Emmy. Playing down his chances of a gong, the British celebrity did nonetheless extend his gratitude to the land down under for all the laughs.

“I will thank Australia right now,” he said.

“I don’t know what the point of Tony Abbott was but it was fun while it lasted.

“It was like taking heroin. It was incredibly exhilarating and it was right that you stopped.”

John Oliver has regularly featured Australia in his sharp comic observations.

He has both praised and criticised the country in which his sister lives, first in his segments for The Daily Show and more recently on his own programme, Last Week Tonight, famously taking stabs at Tony Abbott and some of his more conservative tendencies.
