Sydney Opera House evacuated as Martin Place hostage siege unfolds

Australia’s iconic Sydney Opera House has reportedly been evacuated as an apparent hostage siege unfolds in Martin Place.

It is believed that the evacuation was in response to a suspect package being found.

The city of Sydney was thrown in to an extreme level of alert after a gunman allegedly took customers and staff hostage inside the Lindt Café on Martin Place in the city’s CBD at about 10:45 on Monday morning. A black flag with Islamic script was held up at the window of the cafe, apparently by the hostages.
