Legacy even has a presence in the UK, aptly called London Legacy, which is a registered UK charity in its own right and focuses on supporting widows and children of Australian and New Zealand servicemen who live in the UK.
You can support Legacy in the UK by buying an Anzac Day Legacy pin. These are available now from the reception desk at Australia House in the Strand, or from the CPA Australia office inside Australia House.
You can also buy your Legacy pin at any of the Anzac Day commemorative events in London, detailed below. For more info visit www.legacy.com.au/pages/london.php.
ANZAC DAY IN LONDON
Anzac Day is one of the major events in the Australian High Commission’s calendar each year. In London, you can start Anzac Day by paying your respects at the dawn service held at the Australian War Memorial, Hyde Park Corner. The Service will begin at 5am and conclude at 6am. Tickets are not required but as a large number of people are expected it is suggested you arrive in plenty of time, with a 4:30am arrival recommended.
For those who work around St Paul’s Cathedral there is a short service and wreath laying held in the crypt of St Paul’s Cathedral at the Gallipoli Memorial at 9.30am. This is organised by the Gallipoli Association and everyone is welcome.
Other major events for the day in London include the wreath laying parade and ceremony at the Cenotaph on Whitehall at 11am. This is followed by the noon Anzac service at Westminster Abbey.
To attend the Cenotaph ceremony, it is recommended you arrive before 10.20am and enter from the Trafalgar Square end of Whitehall only. Please try not to take bags with you, as security searches will be taking place.
The Anzac Service at the Westminster Abbey starts at noon and it is also recommended that Australians wishing to attend this service get there in plenty of time. You need a ticket to attend the service and cannot just turn up on the day!
To get your ticket for the Abbey service apply asap at www.australia.org.uk. As part of your online application you will need to supply details of photo ID. Remember to take this along with you on 25 April. The Abbey service is popular so if you want to head along you should get in quickly to secure your ticket. LF
