Colombia elects former M-19 Guerilla member as president

Colombia is currently celebrating a huge victory as well as a big change toward reform. This comes as the country has elected its first leftist president which follows countries like Brazil and the like. 

First-time leftist president elected in Colombia

Right now, Gustavo Petro has promised the country reform in health, free education, and making narcotics readily available to avoid drug trafficking issues in the country. 

So far, the preliminary votes have shown that Gustavo Petro is the lead in the elections for Colombia. This comes as the preliminary votes are much the same as the final votes that will be announced formally. 

To date, Petro has secured 50,5 percent of the votes while Hernandez secured 47,3 percent of the votes. The two former mayors have gone head to head in the elections. Both were also the last two remaining after outlasting many other competitors. 

Promising reform in important issues of the country

Thus far, Petro has been very open about his involvement with the M-19 guerrilla group. After he was jailed and granted amnesty after he spent time in jail for his involvement with the group. 

Presently, Petro shared that he was tortured during his time in prison and hopes to be in talks with the M-19 group about the future.

Joining Petro in the elections in Colombia is Vice President Francia Marquez who is a former housekeeper and a single mother.

According to Time, many will be expecting Petro to be making immediate changes to Colombia as they will be very disappointed if this does not happen. Right now, the people are overjoyed by the results but expect action from Gustavo Petro.
