The recently discovered gold nugget thought to be the biggest ever found in the UK might actually be Australian.
British diver Vincent Thurkettle uncovered the spectacular rock while diving of the coast of Wales. The nugget weighs 97 grams and is about the size of a chicken egg, according to The Telegraph.
The thing is, the area where he discovered the nugget is also the resting place of the ship Royal Charter which was wrecked on it’s way back from Australia in 1859, right in the middle of the Aussie gold rush. The vessel was reported to be carrying some 2000 kilos of the yellow stuff.
Gold is rare enough, but to find a nugget that size (the previous biggest Brit nuggest was only 59 grams, found in 1808), on the ocean floor, off the UK is almost unbelievable… if not for a ship wreck.
Thurkettle has only just now gone public with his find from four years ago. He says the belated reveal was in effort to keep other would be prospectors away from his golden hunting ground.
