While it will take an individual years to completely learn the intricate history, there are plenty of facts and tidbits that one can learn to look smarter and sharpen their knowledge.

Wine Can Improve a Person’s Sex Life

Probably the most interesting fact on this list, the regular consumption of wine is known to boost a person’s sex drive. This is according to a study done by the University of Florence who tested eight hundred and fifty women to reach this conclusion.

Not All Wines Are Good For Your Health

There are multiple rumours that wine has a lot of health benefits. However, this does not apply to all types of wine excluding red wine. This is because red wine includes grape skin. For those who do not know, grape skin has a lot of antioxidants that help prevent cancer and many other diseases. White wine does not contain this grape skin so it misses out on the health benefits. Studies have shown that white wine can even increase the chances of cancer in the digestive system. It is recommended that you keep the amount of white wine you drink to about one or two glasses per day. This will help you have a stronger immune system, stronger bones and lower blood sugar.

The Names of Wines Usually Specify the Region or Variety

The majority of European wines such as pinot Gris are named after the location they are grown in. One such well-known wine is Bordeaux. Bordeaux was produced in the Bordeaux area in France. The reason behind this is because wine makers in the past felt that the location played a major role in how the wine tasted. They believed the sunlight, type of soil and the climate all had an effect on the final taste.

Wine not made in Europe usually has the variety included in the label.

We Have Monks to Thank For Wine

Yes, you read that absolutely right! Ancient monastic groups like the Cistercians refined the art of wine making. They did this all the way back in the Middle Ages. The world famous champagne, Dom Pérignon, was in fact named in honour of a monk called Dom Pierre Pérignon. He was one of the first to pioneer the art of making wine and often experimented with new ways of making wine. The methods he came up with are used even today.

The Oldest Wine Dates Back Six Thousand Years

The oldest remains of wine were found in the Middle East. These remains were uncovered in present day Iran and dated to the Neolithic era. The oldest cultivated vines were discovered in Georgia. According to tests done, they are said to date back to 7000 BC. Historians believe that wine was first created by mistake when the yeast unintentionally touched grapes which turned the sugar into alcohol. Wine making further evolved in ancient Egypt.
