A YOUNG girl has been injured at the Sydney leg of the Soundwave music festival after a flare was released into the crowd. The flare injured three people, causing severe burns described by witnesses as “disfiguring”.
Reports from festival-goers suggest that a total of three flares were lit during the festival, with one being lit during the performance of rock legends Metallica and two being lit during the performance by British band Bring Me The Horizon. Bring Me The Horizon were playing to an audience of around 800 people when the flare that caused the reported injuries was lit in the mosh-pit.
One of the injured Soundwave attendees, reported to be a young girl, was allegedly hit in the arm by a flare and sustained severe burns that required immediate medical attention.
Police confirmed that they would be examining photographs from the Bring Me The Horizon set on Sunday night in an attempt to identify those responsible for igniting the flares. Unconfirmed reports claim that one of the flare incidents that occurred during the Bring Me The Horizon performance after a flare was fired into the air before hitting something and falling back into the crowd.
Festival-goers claim that Soundwave workers were on the scene when at least one of the flare’s was ignited, firing hoses of water at both the flare and the person responsible for setting it off in an attempt to prevent it causing harm to others in the area. No one was apprehended for setting off flares during the festival, although the damage incurred in the incidents has led to an investigation by New South Wales Police.
Soundwave promoter AJ Maddah tweeted about the incident shortly after it occurred, pleading with Soundwave attendees for information leading to the individuals responsible for the flares and making promises to the perpetrators that he would make it his mission to “ruin your life”.
Maddah wrote: “Dear piece of sh*t who lit the flare in BMTH pit: Tonight you seriously burned and disfigured a young girl. I hope you f***ing get yours… Poor little thing is really hurt. Massive awful burn on her forearm. I am devastated for her. :(“
“If you see anyone with a lit flare please take their photo and tweet to me so I can hand to police… If anyone can correctly identify this son of a bitch I will shower you with so much tickets, backstage and cash you wont know what to do… If we catch anyone w/ flares you’ll not only be evicted/arrested, I’ll dedicate every iota of energy & money I can muster to ruin your life.”
Maddah later tweeted his thanks to festival-goers that had provided organisers and police with multiple images of the alleged offenders, who the promoter referred to as a “jerk”, increasing the likelihood that they would be able to be found.
Police said that the majority of the 75 252 strong crowd at the Sydney festival had been well behaved, with only 82 attendees ejected for inappropriate behaviour. Investigations into those responsible for the flare-incidents are ongoing.
