TONY Abbott, speaking on the ABC’s 7.30 program, said under his policy consumers won’t face higher prices and taxpayers won’t face higher taxes.
“We will find savings in the Budget to purchase these emission reductions,” Mr Abbott said.
“One of the good things about our policy is that we will find extra trees … the smart technology to take carbon dioxide from power stations, amongst other things…these are intrinsically good things.”
He said that while he didn’t want to close the La Trobe Valley, if the price was right there was the capacity to move from brown coal to gas.
“What I don’t want to do is kill the coal industry,” Mr Abbott said.
“Let’s face it this is a very odd market – the non-delivery of an invisible product to no-one.”
He said cheats had scammed such markets overseas “and I suspect if we ever try to introduce one in Australia it will be very readily scammed here too.”
Mr Abbott’s comments came as Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced the government would unveil the details of its carbon price policy this Sunday.
