Skilled – Independent Visa (subclass 189)

Please see the basic requirements for a Skilled Migration visa on the overview page.

This is a permanent visa for Australia for skilled workers who are not sponsored by an employer, a state or territory, nor a family member. As such, you can live and be employed anywhere in Australia. Certain family members such as a spouse or child can also be included in the application.

The first step to applying for this visa is to have your skills assessed by the relevant authority, and if successful, you will be asked to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect. This can be done from either from within or outside Australia. Thereafter, you will need to receive an Invitation To Apply (ITA) for the visa in order to progress.

Once you have been granted the visa, you will receive a 5-year multiple entry visa to live and work in Australia, after which you only need to live in Australia for 2 of the 5 years to have the visa reissued for 5 more years. Once the original 5 years is up, you will then need to apply for a Resident Return Visa. Alternatively, if you live in Australia for 4 consecutive years, you will be eligible to apply for citizenship.
