In the entertainment industry each new year comes with fresh productions to keep the audiences entertained and wanting more. When it comes to new productions, we don’t expect anything less from the world’s biggest TV entertainment streaming service, Netflix.

With  Netflix announcing it will be releasing an original film every week in 2021 for its 195 million subscribers, it’s a time when film lovers will be looking out for some great entertainment to see them through the year. Are you ready for this Netflix 2021 weekly challenge? 

  • Don’t Look Up

Directed by Adam McKay, Don’t Look up is a story about two astronauts who must warn mankind of an approaching asteroid that will destroy Earth. The all-star cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Steep, Jennifer Lawrence, Cate Blanchett, Timothee Chalamet and Jonah Hill. This is one not to miss.  If you don’t have a high definition TV to stream Netflix JB Hi-Fi has specials like $50 off Netflix ready TVs, so there is no excuse to miss this star-studded production.

  • The Hand of Go

The Hand of God, directed by Paolo Sorrentino, is rumoured to be based on the Argentinian soccer legend, Diego Maradona. With his recent passing in November 2020 if what they rumours say is true, this could turn out to be a hit for all the soccer fans around the world who loved Maradona. 

  • The Harder They Fall

Produced by Jay-Z and directed by Jeymes Samuel, this is a Western film about a man who discovers that the man who killed his parents is being released from prison. The man has plans for his parents’ killer as he rallies up his old gang to track him down. 

  • The Woman in the Window

This thriller is an adaptation of the novel written by A.J. Finn. It was due for release in 2020 but was delayed due to Covid. It’s about a psychologist who befriends a neighbour from across the street but ends up having her life turned upside when the woman disappears. 

  • O2

O2 is a sci-fi thriller starring Melanie Laurant and directed by Alexandre Aja. The storyline is about a woman who finds herself in a cryogenic chamber but has no recollection of how she got there. She discovers there is no way out and needs to come up with an escape plan before she runs out of oxygen.

  • Army of the Dead 

Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell and Tig Notaro star in this movie by Zack Snyders that follows a group of mercenaries during a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas. The mercenaries plan is to venture into the quarantine zone to carry out the biggest heist in history.  

  • Thunder Force

Thunder Force is a superhero comedy where two childhood friends reunite after one of them creates a treatment that gives them both superpowers to protect their city. Stars include the famous Melissa McCarthy, Octavia Spencer, Melissa Leo and Jason Bateman. 

  • Sweet Girl 

Jason Mamoa, who featured in Game of Thrones, stars as a husband left to raise their only daughter after he loses his wife.  He vows to bring justice to those responsible for her death. This action thriller was directed by Brian Andrew Mendoza who also features in the film. 

  • The Last Mercenary

The legend Jean Claude Van Damme graces our screens once more as he stars in this comedy film. A former secret agent, Van Damme finds he must return to France to help his estranged son after he is falsely accused of arms and drug trafficking. Directed by David Charlon, Van Damme stars as the lead role. 

  • Back to the Outback

This is an animated comedy about a group of Australian deadly animals who plan their escape to the Australian outback after they get tired of being locked up in a zoo with humans always looking in on them. Directed by Harry Cripps and Clare Knight, this animation features the voices of Rachel House, Isla Fisher and Eric Bana.
