Dead Can Dance: from Melbourne to London, to the world

Dead Can Dance is Aussie music duo Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry. Australian music historian Ian McFarlane described Dead Can Dance’s style as “constructed soundscapes of mesmerising grandeur and solemn beauty; African polyrhythms, Gaelic folk, Gregorian chant, Middle Eastern music, mantras, and art rock.”

The pair formed in Melbourne in 1981, moving to London the following year. It wasn’t until the 90s though that the band really tasted success with albums Into the Labyrinth and Spiritchaser.

After a hiatus and brief reunion tour in 2005, Dead Can Dance made their full-blown return with 2011’s Anastasis. It took another seven years for them to bring us 2018’s Dionysus which they were touring before the coronavirus pandemic brought things to a halt. Fans will be eagerly awaiting the band’s return to the stage for their Europa – 2021 tour, which includes the two shows at London’s Eventim Apollo.
